ICE climber Josh Sykes is preparing for the most dangerous expedition of his life.

Josh, 18, of Blenheim Road, will be tackling some of the toughest routes in the Alps at altitudes of up to 4,000m.

He recently returned from a practice trip climbing frozen waterfalls in Norway and the Alps will be his next challenge.

Some of the climbs he will be attempting can take up to two days to complete, which means he will have to sleep on rock faces or ledges.

Much of the work will be done in darkness, as most climbs start at midnight, to lessen the risk of rock falls and avalanches caused by sunlight.

Josh works at Go Outdoors in Wakefield, which is supplying some of his equipment, but he will be going to the University of Sheffield to study architectural engineering design in September.

He said: "There are other routes which are less difficult and can be walked, but for us this is all about a personal test.

"I want to push myself to the limits and the Alps are the next challenge on my list."
