OUTLINE plans for the £12 million rebuilding of Kirk Balk School were revealed at a meeting on Monday.
Several designs of the new advanced learning centre have been proposed by architects, and the current favoured one comprises a central atrium, with seven faculty block “petals” radiating from it.
Other ideas are based around a central covered “street”, with blocks either side.
Construction of the ALC, which will be smaller than the current building in terms of floor space, is scheduled to begin in 2010.
The school will be built on the present playing field, and the old school building will be demolished to make way for new playing fields. This will avoid the need for temporary classrooms.
The construction centre, which is being built, may be moved to bring it closer to the new site.
The new school building will be designed to be as flexible as possible, and may incorporate movable walls so classroom size and uses can be changed.
Chairman of the governors Michael Sanderson, who hosted the consultation, said that the building would have to last 50 years and flexibility was important to cope with unforeseeable changes in technology and education in the future.
Mr Sanderson added that because Kirk Balk is a specialist technology college, technology would be at the heart of the school.
