EXPLOSIONS and choking black smoke woke residents on a Pogmoor Street after a blaze started at a nearby scrap storage yard.
About seven cars were wrecked at the yard on West Road and fire crews and police were called just before 4am on Wednesday.
One resident who lives yards from the scene was awake when the blaze began. She said: "I couldn't sleep and thought I could hear fireworks but it was obviously tyres exploding. When I went back to bed there was an awful smell and it was the fire.
"The bedroom was lit up and the black smoke was horrendous
