A NEW six-hole pitch and putt golf course could be created within the grounds of Wigfield Farm if plans unveiled this week are approved.

It would be open to the public, but the main purpose is for horticulture students to learn about sports turf management and maintaining different grades of grass.

The farm, at Worsbrough, is used by Barnsley College for teaching. John Hopkinson, head of land studies at the college, said: "It would have been much easier to let our students practise on an existing golf course or a bowling green.

"But nobody will let us. This will be a very small course, with very short holes. I don't think it will attract many users, but it will be very good practice for our students."

The course will take up about five acres of the 100-acre site. There will be no buildings and the golf course would be designed to have as little impact on the rural setting as possible.
