PROFIT and Loss, the play to mark the 170th anniversary of the Huskar pit disaster, gets underway on Monday and the producers are looking forward to a full house on all five nights.

The play, by local playwright Sylvia Le Breton, tells the story of the mining disaster of July 4 1838 in which 26 children lost their lives and the subsequent legislation banning women and children from working underground in the pits.

Sylvia said months of hard work has come together and the sold out play will be a fantastic way to remember those who died.

The elaborate set in All Saints' Church, that includes a mine shaft, is now finished thanks to grants the organisers have received from the National Lottery and the Bishop of Wakefield's Development Fund.

Rachel Sisson, treasurer of the Huskar 170, said: "The legacy of the play will keep alive this pivotal local historic event for future generations but also remind people of the continued exploitation of children in work worldwide."

Performances will take place at All Saints' Church, Silkstone, from Monday to Friday starting at 7.30pm.
