THE spotlight has been turned on six unsung heroes of Barnsley, those who go beyond the call of duty for their communities.

They include a woman who helps people conquer addiction to alcohol and drugs and a 15-year-old boy who has become an ambassador for youth in the town.

All were praised for the "massive contribution" they have made to the town by council leader Steve Houghton, at the Spirit of Barnsley Awards at the town hall.

He told guests: "These awards were set up to recognise the work that's been done within our communities by some very special people."

Awards went to Peter Goodlad, John Hallows, Amanda Lowe, William Simon, Omar Amarov and Emily Harding.

Peter Goodlad was praised for his dedicated work to the three-team Athersley Football Club where he is unpaid manager and coach. The club has provided activities for hundreds of young people from the area and produced a number of professional footballers.

John Hallows received his award for his work in community safety. He is chair of Barnsley neighbourhood watch liaison group and has set up 800 schemes across the borough since 1998. He also serves as a victim support volunteer, visiting crime victims at home to offer support.

Awards were presented by Radio Sheffield's Toby Foster and the awards scheme is run by One Barnsley in partnership with Barnsley Chronicle.
