A SUICIDAL man who died after being struck by a train had absconded from a mental health unit because doctors told him he was not being allowed home.

Dale Rodgers died last week after the incident near Measborough Dike, about half a mile from Kendray Hospital where he was an in-patient.

His sister Kathryn said Dale, 21, had expected to be allowed home on Wednesday and had told his family and friends he would kill himself if he were kept in. Hours later he was dead.

Kathryn, 24, of Sheffield Road, Hoyland Common, said: “He had been in and out of Kendray since November and had expected to go home on Wednesday.

“He had told us if he did not get out he would throw himself under a train. The hospital knew that.” Kathryn is furious that Dale, an agoraphobic who lived on Bridge Street with his mum Susan, was allowed to escape even though he had voiced suicidal feelings.

The Primary Care Trust which runs Kendray hospital could not comment on the incident.
