AN IDENTITY card scheme could be introduced to help stamp out underage drinking in town centre pubs and clubs.

The police, council and the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber want to introduce it as soon as possible.

If licensees agree the card will be the main form of acceptable ID providing young people with a legitimate proof of age so they can get into licensed premises.

Those behind the scheme, already operating successfully in Rotherham, say the cards won't be forgeable and they wanted to provide an alternative to carrying passports and driving licences.

• An application to make the town centre a Section 12 zone where people can't drink in public is with the council's solicitors and will be put to the licensing board in September.
