PENSIONERS had a hair-raising experience during their weekly visit to the snippers when they had to be evacuated after an explosion in Royston.
The power supply to 170 households and businesses was cut off on Friday, some were without electricity until Tuesday as workmen repaired 250 metres of frazzled and damaged underground cables.
Betty Fawcett, 81, walked home with sopping wet hair and an afro-style perm when the He and She salon was on Midland Road was cleared by the fire brigade.
She said: "Mrs Morgan from the charity shop came in and said there was something wrong and as she was standing at the door there was this bang and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face."
