A FIT and healthy 15-year-old has died less than a week after being found collapsed in his bedroom by his mum.
Doctors told Benjamin Holmes's family he may have had allergic reaction to or choked on food or may have had hidden heart problems. Further tests are being carried out because the results of a post mortem proved inconclusive.
Benjamin's mum Shauna found the Darton High pupil laying on his bed on September 1. His face had turned blue. He was taken to hospital and put on a life support.
Shauna, of Lower High Royds, Darton, said: "It just won't sink in what's happened. He was absolutely fine, I'd just made him his dinner, a curry, and I had to nip next door to get his younger brother Jacob. It was awful seeing him like that."
Doctors told the family he had suffered heart failure after collapsing, which had starved his brain of oxygen, causing serious brain damage and leaving him in a coma.
Last Thursday they said Benjamin might never wake up and Shauna made the heartbreaking decision to turn off her son's life support on Saturday after doctors said there was nothing else they could do for him.
Shauna added: "He was such a funny lad and a real character, very outgoing and had lots of friends. All I can say is we had 15 lovely years with him and it's heartbreaking to think he's gone. We've been robbed of one of the best."
