NEW road markings at Tankersley roundabout left drivers so confused Highways Agency contractors have been forced to go back and change them.

The junction of the A61 and A616 had been repainted in September costing taxpayers £140,000.

But police and council workers have monitored the traffic and found the new markings had caused 'safety problems.'

Council engineers said many motorists had ignored the new rules which meant only drivers turning left could use the left-hand lane.

Assistant director for highways Darren Richardson said the new arrangements needed amending.

He said: "The local highways authorities of Barnsley and Sheffield, along with South Yorkshire Police road safety team, are working with the Highways Agency to put in place revisions that will hopefully alleviate the concerns."

The highways agency said work was being carried out to alleviate the problems but would not confirm how much the corrections would cost.
