SHOP owners in Penistone say the old market has become a dumping ground and a haven for teenagers drinking alcohol and the council is doing nothing about it.

The site on Back Lane is empty six days a week and youths often congregate under market shelters in the evening. People also break into a derelict building and dump rubbish.

Business owners say they have called the council more than a dozen times in the last two months to get the area cleaned up and keep getting passed on to different departments.

A spokesman for the council said yesterday: "The street lighting repairs will be completed today and the rubbish will also be removed today."
