PLANS for 600 houses on the former North Gawber pit site have been withdrawn by developers after planners recommend they be refused.
Gladedale South Yorkshire and UK Coal Plc initially told local people at a meeting in March that they wanted to build up to 250 homes in the middle of Mapplewell.
That figure was more than doubled when the planning application was submitted. At Tuesday's planning board the plans were withdrawn.
Twenty four objections were made by members of the public concerning the effect the redevelopment would have on local infrastructure.
Locals felt the development was too large for Mapplewell and would place undue pressure on the community and its facilities including schools, libraries, dentists and medical services. Concern was also raised over possible drainage and flood risk.
