URGENT repairs to a Royston church roof will finally start after members raised £81, 000 to match a grant from heritage organisations.
St John the Baptist Church will close on Saturday January 17 for several weeks after the cash was raised to match a grant of £124, 000 to repair the nave, chancel, south aisle and south porch roofs and masonry.
It as part of a scheme to support historic places of worship by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Church warden Christina Cockroft said: "It's very exciting. It's been a long and ongoing process and we have known for some years that it needed doing.
"Water used to come in through the roof and we would be running round with buckets and telling people not to sit in places or in wet patches."
