A RIDER from Royston was air lifted to hospital with a fractured spine after her horse sank in mud at Carlton Stack.

Katrina Mountford, 37, of Church Hill, was on the old railway line on Boxing Day with a friend when her five-year-old horse Chester panicked and bolted.

She said: "The gates had been removed and as I entered on to the stack it was obvious four by four vehicles had been on there. The horse just sank into the ground.

"I didn't think I had sustained any injury and got back on Chester to try to get him to what I thought was firmer land but it wasn't firmer and he sank even more."

Katrina then lost all sensation in her lower body and her friend called 999 but an ambulance couldn't reach her because of the mud.

She was air lifted to the spinal unit at Pinderfields Hospital where she had numerous scans and was kept in for three days.
