A BABY was shaken so hard it left her brain damaged and severely disabled, a court was told.
Stuart Bailey, 41, of Key Street, Hoyland Common, is accused of inflicting the injuries on the 11-week-old baby in July 2005.
Andrew Robertson QC, prosecuting, said Bailey had been left alone with the child for the first time when her mother took her own mum to bingo.
Sheffield Crown Court was told Bailey had called her to hurry home when the baby started wheezing, losing consciousness and went floppy and pale.
They took her to Barnsley hospital where she needed help to breathe before being transferred to Sheffield Children's Hospital where it was found she had bleeds to the brain, which had also been starved of oxygen, and haemorrhages on both eyes.
Children's eye specialist Richard Gregson, who studied her medical records, said he believed the haemorrhages were 'more likely than not' caused by shaking.
Bailey denies child cruelty. The trial continues. Full story in this week's Chronicle
