THURNSCOE'S tribute to its war dead is going to get a facelift thanks to the local war memorial trust and English Heritage.

The War Memorial Trust has had to raise £6,000 itself as it's in charge of maintenance because the monument isn't listed and English Heritage will hand out over £2,700.

It will pay for re-pointing, removal of white paint at the bottom, cleaning of the plaques, repainting of the plinth and other general cleaning and repair work.

A statue of a soldier at the top of the 20-foot high memorial is made of limestone and has been eroding over time due to rainwater. Work undertaken by a specialist contractor is expected to get underway in April.
