AN exhibition of work by some of the world’s most famous artists has been launched at a town centre gallery.

The Cooper Gallery was selected as one of four locations in the UK to host the ‘Pushing Paper’ exhibition for four months.

It features drawings from as early as the 1970s, and pieces which have never been publicly exhibited before.

The collection includes the work of more than 50 leading names in the art world and world-famous artists including David Hockney, Grayson Perry, Tracy Emin and Anish Kapoor.

Alison Cooper, exhibition officer for Barnsley Museums, said: “This exhibition is really third time lucky.

“The first was supposed to be in March 2020, then December, but was put on hold again for obvious reasons.

“We’ve been working on this since 2017, after applying to the Bridget Riley Programme.

“This is actually the last time the exhibition will be seen in the UK, and the last time the Hockney pieces will be shown for a while as they need to rest.”

Coun Tim Cheetham, cabinet member for culture, added: “These are works by the superstars of the art world and we are absolutely delighted to have secured this exhibition.

“This is the only time that people will be able to see these drawings in one place so it’s a complete one-off and real coup for Barnsley and Yorkshire.

“The fact an exhibition of international calibre is coming to Barnsley shows where we now are on the global stage when it comes to attracting and providing first class tourism experiences for the people of the borough, the county and the country.”
