SEVERAL deer died after animal rights extremists cut fences and herded hundreds of deer out of Round Green venison farm.

Young deers and milking females were among the animals which died because of stress caused by the incident on Friday night.

Now some orphaned calves are having to be hand fed by staff at the farm on Round Green Lane, Stainborough.

Farmer Richard Elmhirst, 69, was angered by the attack for which the Animal Liberation Front has claimed responsibility.

“Our animals are born here and regard these fields as home. These people forced them out and they have killed deer because of that.

“We have calves dying as a result.

“You get very close to your animals so it is an emotional thing as well as physical.

“The deer accept us almost as one of them and our herdsman is out every day to look after their needs and to see if any are injured.”

Deer are naturally territorial and treat their place of birth as home, Richard added.

He said: “These people purport to save animals and claim it is an animal welfare issue but they are actually damaging them."
