COUNCIL lawyers have approached two specialist firms to help them pursue a negligence claim against the architects who designed the new Civic.

Unforeseen strutural problems caused delays and meant the cost of the project soared from £11m to £18m and forensic quantity surveyors and specialist construction lawyers will be used by Barnsley Council to compile evidence and build a potential case against Allen Tod Architects.

Borough Secretary Andrew Frosdick, the council's top legal officer, has been authorised to 'incur expenditure' to appoint the experts.
