GREEN fingered pupils at Brampton Cortonwood have created a garden to celebrate a year of food and farming.

The five new allotments were funded by Yorkshire Water's One Million Green Fingers campaign which helps to create sustainable and healthy gardens in schools.

Launched in the same year as the government's year of food and farming in education, it aims to help 100 schools in Yorkshire between April 2009 and March 2010.

Volunteers and parents have spent hours with the children building allotments and planting vegetables. Site Supervisor, Carol Dyson, said: "We applied to Yorkshire Water for the £500 grant last year and are extremely grateful for their support.

"Not every school in Yorkshire is selected so we feel privileged - we would have had to have held several fundraisers to even come close to that amount.

"Not only will the garden teach children about healthy eating and where food comes from but it will keep the grounds looking lovely."
