WELFARE rights officers are urging pensioners to get their share of the £2bn national pot of unclaimed benefits payments.
Barnsley service manager Peter Francis believes the town’s old folk are losing out on a lot of cash, despite campaigns to raise awareness of the issue.
He said: “Just last week a disabled pensioner was helped to claim an extra £4.25 per week. Not a lot, but enough to allow her to get a taxi back from the supermarket instead of struggling on the bus.”
On other occasions the welfare rights team has managed to double payments to Barnsley pensioners.
Council spokesman for finance Coun Alan Gardiner added: “I would love to see Barnsley as the town with the highest take-up of these benefits for people entitled to them. Barnsley pensioners have worked hard all their lives and deserve to enjoy their entitlement.”
