A SHAFTON hero has been nominated for a bravery award after battling flames to rescue two car crash victims.
The fire brigade has recommended Darren Wilson of Ashwell Close for the award following the accident on the road between Brierley and Great Houghton last Wednesday.
Darren, 37, was driving on Moor Lane towards Brierley when he came across a BMW and a burning Ford Focus.
With no thought for his own safety he pulled Alison Davidson of Wadsley Bridge, Sheffield, through the window of the Ford.
He then dragged a seriously injured Brierley man Wayne Crossland from the wreckage of the BMW.
Darren then carried them both to safety as there was a danger both vehicles would explode.
Darren said: “I came around the corner and obviously there had been a crash. At first I thought surely the police should have moved the vehicles, then it clicked that it had just happened and I was the first on the scene.
“Adrenaline just takes over and I just did what I thought was right. First aiders say you shouldn't move injured people but in this instance it was a matter of life or death.
John Dale, watch manager at Brampton fire station, put Darren forward for the award — only the sixth time he has done so in 23 years of service.
