THE town hall is to close for a year in the summer as £6m is spent on improvements and turning the bottom two floors into a museum.

Staff will move out and at least 70 couples planning weddings at the register office will have to go elsewhere.

Exact numbers affected won't be known until the start date for work is confirmed - last night the council said it was likely to be the end of September.

Council leader Steve Houghton said: "The weddings service is one of the key issues we've got to address to make sure people are looked after."
