HUNDREDS of fans queued up for the chance to meet Barnsley legend Neil Redfearn last week.

Former midfield maestro Redfearn, who led the Reds into the Premiership in 1997, was signing copies of his book at WH Smiths on Friday.

‘There’s only one Neil Redfearn’ follows his career through 15 clubs, including his time at Oakwell when he led the club up to the top flight for the first time.

Nicknamed Redders, he finished as the league’s highest scoring midfielder during their year at the top.

More than 200 turned up to the signing and Neil, who recently signed for Bradford Park Avenue after parting company with Scarborough, stayed until he had met everyone.

He said: “The reception to the book has been good. It is a different slant on a career in professional football.

“People are keen to read about the Premiership season. It was the best time the club has ever had and it is what they are trying to strive towards now.”

Neil refused to rule out returning to Barnsley one day on the other side of the touchline.

“I would love to come back on the coaching side, I have a lot of affection for the club and the town.

“I always had a great rapport with the supporters. I think as much of them as they do of me and I am one of them, a Yorkshire lad at heart.”
