A YOUNG chatterbox put up and shut up yesterday during a three-hour sponsored silence to raise money for the Haiti earthquake appeal.

Ben Cartwright, six, completed what his class teacher said was 'quite an achievement' as he sat silent for six half-hour blocks.

As part of their school work Ben and fellow year one pupils in class two at Holy Cross were asked to set themselves a target.

Ben said he wanted to raise money for the victims of the Caribbean disaster. Class teacher Vicky Deaves said: "We had a think about how he could do it and decided on the sponsored silence because he can't stop talking and it was something he could really try and work at.

"It was impressive and selfless for a six year-old to come up with but was a challenge because he is exceedingly talkative."

Dinner ladies, teachers and the other classes have been sponsoring Ben's efforts.
