A STRAY Chinese lantern caused fears a house was on fire in the town centre.

Fire-fighters were called to a property in Grafton Street at about 6.30pm on Sunday after a member of the public reported seeing flames coming from the roof of a house.

But fire crews from Royston and Barnsley were left scratching their heads when a thermal-imaging camera used on the roof revealed a heat source but they couldn't find the fire.

A fire spokesman said: "When we got there the roof was glowing and we were trying to work out where the heat source was coming from.

"We put the heat cameras on, there was nothing in the loft so we think a Chinese lantern landed on the roof and burnt itself out."
