FEARS of job cuts have erupted after council bosses were asked to consider how their departments would operate if budgets were slashed by half.

Many workers now fear for their future after an e-mail, sent on Monday from the corporate communications department, warned of 'difficult financial challenges' ahead.

Unions yesterday said the e-mail was ill conceived and had led to fear, not innovation.

Bob Williams, head of corporate communications, said the '50 per cent project' was purely an exercise.
