A ZEBRA crossing for a busy main road in Millhouse Green ‘is not justified’, according to a survey by Barnsley Council.

The chances of the village getting a road crossing on Manchester Road were dashed at a a council meeting last Thursday when members were told the road does not qualify.

It follows a campaign by Penistone West ward councillors who have been calling for a safe crossing in the village for years.

At present there are no markings on the road for people to use, such as a zebra crossing, and children going to the primary school on Lee Lane are relying on one small warning sign to get them across safely.

Coun Robert Barnard told the Chronicle something still needs to be done, despite the survey results, because the A628 is a busy main road.

“We have been asking for a zebra crossing on the A628 for some time, mainly for parents and children going to the primary school in Millhouse Green. As it is now we have kids trying to cross the road with heavy traffic coming both ways and no help. Naturally parents are concerned about the safety of their children when they’re having to do this. The highways department at the council has carried out a survey and according to guidelines set out by the government it found it does not justify one.”
