PUPILS at more than half of Barnsley primary schools will not take SATs exams next week – because teachers are boycotting the tests.

The National Association of Headteachers and the National Union of Teachers are taking the action because they believe the exams are not in children’s best interests.

It means hundreds of pupils across Barnsley will continue with lessons.

Athersley South headteacher Steve Iredale is Barnsley secretary, and a national executive member, of the NAHT.

He said the boycott was likely to affect about 60 per cent of primary schools in Barnsley.

He said: “The SATs tests will not take place at those schools.

“It will be a normal school week.”
