PRETTY Margaret Roebuck was crowned Barnsley Beckett Hospital Queen at a ceremony held at St James’s Vicarage, Worsbrough Bridge, in the mid-1930s.
Anne Whitehead, formerly of Barnsley but now living on the Isle of Wight, has submitted two photographs of the occasion to Memories.
She has named Margaret’s attendants as, left to right: Mary Peacock, Mary Bower, Kathleen Fenal, John Stevenson, Enid Beckett and Audrey Beckett, unknown. Margaret was crowned by the wife of the vicar.
Enid and Audrey Beckett were cousins. Audrey was Margaret’s sister and Enid, who lives in Worsbrough Bridge, is her cousin. On the right of the photograph is Margaret’s mother Esther Beckett (wearing a floral dress) who made the delightful attendants’ dresses and the suit worn by John Stevenson.
Esther, who was born in Worsbrough Dale, was a talented and creative dress maker and was well-known in the district for the beautiful dresses she made for local brides.
Margaret Roebuck was the daughter of George Roebuck, a teacher, who was the president of the Ward Green Community Association.
Margaret has lived on the Isle of Wight since 1991 but she still has happy memories of living in Barnsley.
