A CHRONICLE reader who formerly lived at Grimethorpe, but who is now a resident of the Isle of Wight, has made contact with Memories.
Although happily living on the island, he sometimes has a longing for his home town and its people. He particularly remembers as a young man visiting a pub in Barnsley town centre called The Wine Shades. He recalled the long queues waiting outside to get in before it opened and the great atmosphere of the place.
In an old Theatre Royal programme dated September 6 1954, the Wine Shades had an advert which stated: “Spend a jovial evening at the Wine Shades Hotel.†General Manager and licensee at the time was the popular Tommy Fisher.
The welcoming advert stated: “His pleasure (presumably meaning Tommy Fisher); Your Happiness, Music Nightly.â€
The pub closed many years ago but, no doubt, many of our readers will still remember spending happy hours there.
