GRITTERS were out from 4am to prepare the roads for Monday morning's rush hour. Nine lorries deposited about 65 tonnes of grit.

Snow started in the early hours and most of the borough was covered by the time people got up for work. This winter the council has stockpiled record grit reserves - 2,000 tonnes more than last year.

At the start of the season there were more than 9,000 tonnes in the council's two salt domes at Penistone and Smithies.
