CHRONICLE columnist Ian McMillan has sparked a flurry of letters to the Chronicle following his views on racist football chants published last week.

Mr McMillan said there were several ugly incidents at the game against Southampton and asked for a discussion to take place about the issue through the pages of the Chronicle.

He said: "Singing, 'Where's your caravan?' isn't funny, big or clever. It's racist and illegal and stewards should have dealt with it.

"Worse than that, there was monkey chanting towards Bradley Wright-Philips, which made me feel ashamed to be a Barnsley fan."

He went on to say: "This town is changing. For years this town was all white and now, in recent times, we're seeing faces from Africa, faces from all over Europe, from Asia and Latin America, bringing variety and excitement to our streets. And we have to learn to live together.

"I'd like people to respond to this column; I'd like there to be letters in next week's from people arguing for and against."

A selection of the views sent in will appear in this week's paper.
