GRITTING was carried out across Barnsley at 4pm and 6pm on Thursday and the 'snow plan' was activated, a council spokesman said.

Gritters were sent out again at 9am on Friday when snow began to fall heavily and continued, where possible, throughout Friday morning.

A spokesman said: "Work is being hampered by traffic congestion and in some areas, vehicles abandoned due to the snow."

She advised road users and pedestrians to use extreme care and said journeys should not be made unless necessary.
