EIGHT suspected football hooligans have been arrested in connection with violence that broke out when Barnsley FC took on Hull City FC in October.
Harborough Hill WMC was trashed before the game and fighting broke out on Regent Street after the televised match.
Barnsley police led an extensive investigation into the trouble and a team of detectives trawled hours of cctv footage and searched the club for forensic evidence to trace the suspects.
Officers in Hull this week arrested eight youths, aged between 15 and 17, on suspicion of violent disorder. The timing of the arrests coincides with the corresponding fixture at the Hull City’s KC Stadium tomorrow.
Supt David Hartley is responsible for policing football matches in Barnsley. He hoped the arrests would put off Barnsley hooligans from seeking retribution in Hull.
“It was certainly a consideration that when somewhere has been smashed in Barnsley by away fans, what is the likelihood of our gang of hooligans wanting to repay the compliment.
“We are looking to disrupt and dispel that."
