Barnsley conceded a second half penalty to go down 2-1 at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Eagles just about deserved to take the three points, whuch boosts their chances of Championship survival, but they were gifted both goals by a Reds team who continued to be 'nearly men'.

A dreadful pass from Danny Haynes let in Neil Danns for Palace's first goal, although Luke Steele ahould perhaps have done better with the low shot that evaded him and crept into the bottom corner.

With Jacob Butterfield showing up well in the first half, the visitors drew level shorlty before the break when Jason Shackell's long ball into the box was brilliantly sidefooted home by Marlon Harewood for his third goal in Barnsley colours.

However, substitute Diego Arismendi conceded a second half penalty with time ticking away, a silly push giving the referee no alternative, and former Everton forward James Vaughan sent Steele the wrong way to earn the Eagles a priceless victory.

As for the Reds they still need a few more points to be mathematically safe, and they continue to fall short in their attempts to be a more attractive and ruthless Championship outfit.
