Two drunken men achieved lifetime ambitions when they broke into Oakwell and ran down the pitch, Barnsley Magistrates’ Court was told.

Peter Lee Batley and Gary Darlington ran into the penalty area as burglar alarms blared, said Batley’s solicitor Peter Howard.

Mr Howard said the men, both 35, were walking past Oakwell talking about football.

Julian Brook, for Darlington, said the pair had been drinking and decided to go on the Oakwell pitch and have a look around. “Mr Darlington was curious. He had never been to Oakwell before. He only has a hazy recollection of what happened.”
