Two Barnsley heritage sites are on the route of a high-speed rail link according to reports.

One half of the £34bn ‘High Speed 2’ route  from London to Birmingham has been published by the government.

But Action Groups Against High Speed Two (AGAHST) claims to have pieced together the second half to Manchester and Leeds  claiming it would cut through Barnsley.

And a Sunday newspaper, conducting its own investigations, believes the route would most likely pass close to Wombwell Wood and Monk Bretton Priory.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said the claims were untrue and said the route north of Birmingham had not yet been decided.
