Thieves are using mobile phone technology to see if there is something worth stealing from cars.
Up to 21 have been broken into in four days in Hoyland by crooks using Bluetooth to check a vehicle contains devices such as sat navs, lap top computers, cameras and mobile phones.
PD Andy Thompson said they are using their own mobile phone's Bluetooth networking facility to link up with other devices a short distance away, registering whether there is a Bluetooth gadget in a car they are standing next to.
"If it registers that something has Bluetooth in the car next to them they’re breaking in. “It could be a camera, lap top or mobile phone and they’re breaking in to find out what it is.”
