Houses should ‘not be allowed’ to fall into disrepair despite spending cuts, councillors have said.

A meeting was called to discuss the potential impact of reduced spending on repairs at council property. The meeting also discussed the reduction in housing benefit, which could have an impact in living standards for those in private housing, and concerns that private rented landlords may reduce spending on maintenance.

Coun Graham Kyte said: “There are a lot of good landlords in the borough providing top quality well maintained accommodation for Barnsley people, but there are a small minority who do not and who need to be brought into line.”
