A woman who stole a cardigan to stave off the cold has been given a three month curfew.

Leonie May Starkie, 27, took the clothing from Marks and Spencer because there was no heating at her home, Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told.

Alyson Goldsmith, defending, said Starkie had recently got her own accommodation for the first time in her life but there was no heating and it was sparsely furnished. She said: "Miss Starkie did not have enough money and took something to keep herself warm."

Mrs Goldsmith said Starkie, of St Joseph's Gardens, Barnsley had been released from prison in September and had had problems claiming benefits.

She said of Starkie: "She lives frugally. Money is especially tight."
