IN FROM CANADA FOR 90TH BIRTHDAY

MRS Florence May James had some long distance visitors for her 90th birthday on Sunday.

Her son Leslie and his family travelled from Pickering, near Toronto, Canada, to celebrate the event and enjoy a short holiday.

Leslie, a foreman fitter for a central heating unit manufacturer, left Britain for Canada about 30 years ago with his Wombwell-born wife Helena.

He had previously worked for British Rail and for the Farm Shop, then situated on Market Hill.

His return for the small family party saw him accompanied by his son Davis and daughter Lesley as well as Helena.

Also crowding into Mrs James’ home in Wakefield Road, Barnsley, was her other son, George Gilbert and his wife Dorothy of Haworth Close, Monk Bretton and daughter Hilda Townsend and husband Frank.

DAREDEVIL AMBITIONS

The ten-year-old is already a member of the young England training squad and has skied in France and Austria.

Helen, of Ambleside Grove, Ardsley, recently returned from a training trip with the squad in Austria - where she broke her thumb.

A pupil of Ardsley Oaks Junior School, she learned to ski just three years ago with her parents Kathleen and Barry.

“We have been skiing for 13 years and she outskies both of us,” said Mrs Keegan.

“She leaves us standing.”

Helen said: “I like racing and going fast.

“I’m not scare.

“When I’m old enough I hope to get into the full England squad.”

HE’S ALL TIED UP

A BARNSLEY record hangs around publican Peter Bristowe’s neck.

Peter has a whopping 150 ties - and he wears a different one every time he opens up at Chennell’s bar on Wellington Street.

“Some people think I’m mad for collecting so many ties,” he told the Chronicle.

“Being in the licensed trade, brewery reps started giving me ties and it snowballed from there.

“Now I’ve got ties ranging from the C.I.D Regional Squad to Oxspring United Football Team - and I can name every one.

“Every time someone comes into the pub with a new tie, I try and persuade them to part with it.

“A John Smith’s area manager once came in with a John Smith’s tie and I swapped him for one of my spare Bass Charrington.”
