Masked armed robbers stole £40,000 from a transit van delivering cash to a cash machine on a petrol station forecourt.
Two men ambushed staff refilling the cash point at the Shell garage, Sheffield Road, Birdwell.
The men, who were wearing dark clothes, fled over a fence and down a driveway with the cash boxes to a waiting car parked on nearby Rockley Avenue
.It sparked a police hunt with the armed response team, dog units and the police helicopter. Officers confirmed a firearm was used, but were unable to say what the weapon was.
