THE family of local footballer Steve Fellows managed to raise £310 at his funeral for a cause close to his heart.

Steve grew up in Low Valley before moving to Darfield - but it was his love for Houghton Main that made him so popular across the borough.

He was an integral part of the 1974/75 side which won several local cups that campaign - including a 3-2 Montagu Cup win against Northcliffe WMC.

That side was managed by John ‘Jack’ Short - the former Wolves, Stoke City and Barnsley defender.

He carried on playing for the club into his late 40s and his family decided they would raise money at his funeral for Houghton Main - and they managed to raise a total of £310.

A spokesperson for Houghton Main said: “We want to say a massive thank you here at Houghton Main Sports and Social Club to the beloved family who have generously donated £310 in his memory for our cricket and football youth teams.”
