LOCALS flocked to the site of the former Barnsley Main Colliery as the group behind its upkeep held an open day.

Volunteers of the Barnsley Main Heritage Group have worked hard to develop the site, making sure the historical landmark remains in good condition and becomes a place where people can visit and discover more about the life of miners.

Visitors included Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis as well as a number of local councillors from across the borough.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Thank you so much to those who came out to support us and enjoy and learn from all our fantastic stall holders.

“There was a great variety of skill and learning on display and shared - we have a truly talented community - we appreciate you all.

“From art to willow weaving, to drone flying, from mining and museums to canals, from helping homeless vets to Scouts demonstrating their skills and Buttons Cat Rescue - it was an all round great event.”

Dan added: “It was great to be at Barnsley Main Colliery.

“The volunteers from Barnsley Main Heritage Group put on a great event, and their passion for our borough’s history is highly infectious.”
