Petrol pumps in Barnsley ran dry as motorists started panic-buying fuel.

The forecourt at Asda supermarket, Old Mill Lane, was taped off and shut after it ran out of both petrol and diesel by midday on Thursday.

One member of staff said it had been non-stop throughout the morning. "People have been panic-buying. It's been busy all morning," she said.

"We ran out last thing this morning but there's a delivery coming at 6pm."

Lisa Malloy, of Kingstone, was caught in the queues at Morrisons in town."I've come because I've only got a bit of petrol left but I definitely think people have been panic buying," she said.

The government has been accused of causing 'unnecessary panic' following the news of a potential strike.

No strike dates have been set and seven days' notice would given by the union before any action.
