Multi-millionaire Barnsley FC owner Patrick Cryne hit the rich-list on the back of dishonest claims about the IT firm he was running, a court was told.

But jurors were told Cryne cannot stand trial because he has 'become unwell' since proceedings began.

Cryne, 61, of The Tannery, Glossop, was not before the court as prosecutors opened the case against him and three co-accused. They said the men were all directors of IT software firm iSoft and were responsible for giving bogus details about its finances while involved with a major NHS software project.

The accused each deny conspiracy to make misleading statements promises or forecasts, contrary to the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 and section 1 of the Criminal Law Act.
