JON RUSSELL and Jamaica suffered a disappointing start to the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the USA and Canada.
They lost 1-0 against Guatemala – who they had beaten 3-0 three days earlier in a World Cup qualifier – in their opening game on Monday night in Carson, California.
Russell, who has two international goals already this summer, started in midfield and was taken off after 85 minutes by manager Steve McClaren.
Jamaica are now due to move across California to San Jose to face Guadeloupe, including former Barnsley player Dimitri Cavare, on Friday night.
The final group game is against Panama on Tuesday evening in Austin, Texas.
The top two go into the quarter-finals played on June 28 and 29 with the semi-finals on July 2 and the final on July 6.
Russell will miss some of the Reds’ pre-season, with how much depending on how far Jamaica get in the competition.
Russell netted 11 goals for the Reds last season, including five goals in his last five games, and has a year remaining on his current contract.
