The man who came up with the famous slogan for Ronseal wood stain is working for Barnsley Council as a free marketing consultant.

Ged Shields is volunteering to encourage businesses and retailers to invest in Barnsley, including in the redevelopment of the market and the town centre. The link up came about when Ged, 51, of Hoylandswaine, and council leader Steve Houghton met in the gym and they are both Barnsley FC season ticket holders.

They began chatting about the challenges facing the town, and Ged offered to lend his experience. He has told the Chronicle the only thing he can promise is we won't end up with 'Barnsley - It does exactly what it says on the tin'. "I don't think that one will work twice," said Ged.
